Legal document, 8-1/2” x 13-1/2”, January 13, 1893 being a statement of the estate of Nathan D. Champion deceased, made by his administrator, J. Rufus Champion who signs it in two separate places. Nathan D. Champion (1857 -1892) Hero to some and Cattle Rustler to others, Nate Champion was the leader of the Small Rancher Association who fought the Cattle Barons in the infamous Johnson County War of the 1890's. Nate Champion was gunned down after battling more than 50 assailants working for the Cattle Barons. Nate was able to hold them off for most of the day, but was driven from his cabin after they set it on fire. Rufus Champion (1859-1893) was the brother of Nate Champion and was the last man to die in the Johnson County War. He was killed by Mike Shonsey near the Horseshoe Bar Ranch near Lusk, Wyoming. Shonsey's friends claim it was self-defense and Dud's friends claim it was murder. Bill Oneal's version in his book, "The Johnson County War" would seem to agree with Shonsey's version.
