Pair of war-date Autograph Letters Signed by George H. Patch, 19th Massachusetts Infantry, POW at Antietam, includes: ALS, 6pp. octavo, Picket Post No. 22, January 30, 1862, with cover, and reads in part: “...I myself do not believe the war will be over in 6 months but some do. There was a report prevelant around here that the rebels were driven out of Manassas and that the war would be over in 30 days, but that, like all other reports, has all blown over...McClellan is expected to make an advance...I presume it was the Emancipation of the slaves that they are discoursing at the Lyceum....” Fine condition...plus; ALS , 3pp. octavo, Falmouth, Virginia, March 12, 1862, with cover, and reads in part: “...There is considerable excitement this morning, orginating from the report that the rebels had congregated quite a force opposite United States Ford, it is supposed with the intention of crossing. But I guess that if they do that they will go back lively. You can bet that Joe Hooker has got his eyes open for them.......This war I think must be carried on until either one side or the other is beaten...Col. Hinkes is promoted to a Brig Gen. and the opinion of the Officers of this Regt is that he will command the Brigade. I hope so for he is a worthy man and a brave officer...we have had a Grand Review by Major Gen. Hooker, there were about 10,000 men present, and they made a fine appearance. Capt. Mahoney is in command of our Regt. now...” Fine condition. (2 items)
