A rare Medal of Honor winner's war-date letter, 8pp. 8vo., 1st Sgt. Wilmon W. Blackmar, Co. K, 15th Penn. (Anderson Troop) Cavalry, Chattanooga, Tenn., Oct. 27, 1863, to his father, in part: "…appearances indicate that we shall stay at Head qrs. [since Rosecrans' removal] Gen. Thomas has made few changes…so we shall stay for the present…our forces are fighting near or on Lookout Mt. with what success I do not know, but this I do know. We have got to clear Lookout Mt. of sharpshooters-so we can use the river…we shall open communication and save the place but still we may not. They cant drive us out…our horses have been…some over a week without food…I have one to three horses starve every day…the men are on short rations…I came to war expecting to see hardship and I have never suffered as much…firing can plainly be heard and…the Rebs are seriously opposing our fellows in their attempt to posses Old Lookout…we get so used to hearing cannon & musketry that we pay but little attention to it and eat, sleep, laugh & talk as though we were in the Tip Top House Mt. Washington…it takes pretty heavy & unusual fringe to disturb those whose turn it is to sleep…Wilmon." Near fine.
