Thomas", includes: ALS, 3p. octavo, Vicksburg, Mississippi, March 26, 1864, with Free Franked cover, and reads in part: "...I received from your brother a letter dated Port Gibson...requesting a box of clothing for which I have obtained a permit I enclose it and you can go to work and send the box as he requests...My days operations under the orders of the President are most unpleasant, for I see grief, worry and oppression..." Fine...plus; ALS, 3p. octavo, Natchez, Mississippi, February 22, 1865, in part: "...I then saw General Davidson, the commander, and obtained his permission to send it [a trunk] across the lines at any pint...Going soon after on the Iron Clad Berton the Captain (McCauley) told me the 'Avenger' would leave in a day or two for Grand Gulf, so I saw the Captain of that Gun boat, & he promised to put the trunk on the gun boat off Grand Gulf...A few days since I made a narrow escape from death or capture by Guerillas they came within 40 yards of me and fired into my boat...I was for the moment on the shore. The shot fell just short of Lorenzo as he was training his piece to throw a shell. No one was hurt and we soon drove them off..." Fine.
