CROCKER, Marcellus Monroe (1830 - 1865) entered the United States military academy at West Point in 1847, but left at the end of his second year and studied law, practicing later in Des Moines, Ia. In May, I86I, he joined the national army as major in the 2nd Iowa volunteers. In 1864, upon the reenlistment of his brigade, he joined Sherman's army, and was present at the siege of Atlanta and on the march to the sea, commanding a division part of the time. He was suffering from consumption all during his service, and was ordered to Mexico at his personal solicitation, in hopes of bettering his health. He returned afterwards to Washington, D. C., and died there, Aug. 26, 1865. War date Autograph Letter Signed, “M M Crocker, Brig Gen’l Cmdg, 4th Div”, August 15, 1863, Head Quarters 4th Div., 17th Army Corp, 1pp., fine. In full, “I am personally acquainted with Lt. Col. A.M. Powell cheif of artillery for the 17th army corps. I understand from him that he would like the command of a Cavalry regiment. I desire to say in his behalf that I regard him as one of the best officers in the service, in camp he is industrious and thoroughly acquainted with the minutest duties of a soldier - on the battle field he is the bravest of the brave - always cool and always competent.” ... plus, CDV, chest up of Crocker with backmark Barr & Young, Army Photographers, Vicksburg, Mississippi.
