Union soldier’s four page letter written by “R.F. Taylor” who enlisted on 4/25/1861 at Rochester, NY as a Captain into "A" Co. NY 13th Infantry; was commissioned into Field & Staff NY 33rd Infantry; and on 11/19/1863 he was commissioned into Field & Staff NY 1st Vet Cavalry. Datelined Frederick Md., August 4, 1864, he writes in part, “When I last wrote you ... I had preceeded about 50 miles when I ran right into the enemy on their way to Chambersburg ... we came very near to be captured ... the people along the way took us to be rebels as they could not believe that such a small squad could dare attempt travel through a country so thickly infested with enemy ... in less than an hour after I left the hotel the Rebs had taken possession of the town. I thank my stars that I had been taken for a Reb once in my life. .. the people had determined to defend their homes and turned out armed with rifles, shotguns, pistols and all manner of arms ... The leader being an old soldier of the 22nd P.V. Cav once belonged to my brigade. ...
