Great Washington Grand Review letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Washington shoemaker Kennard Cox (1834-?), Washington, May 25, 1865 to his aunt [Elizabeth Reeves Cox Shinn (1813-1891), reading, in part: "….I have not been in the service since the first call for three month men. I got plenty of the soldier's life in that short time. They would not take me as a volunteer on account of a discharge from my right ear. I am very hard of hearing at times-more-so in damp weather. They should have taken me for a drafted man…I am strong administration man-down on all kinds of rebels-[and] want every inch of ground that composed the Old Union and willing to fight to get it. The Grand Review is over and it was grand in every sense of the word. There never [were] so many persons in this city. Some had to walk the streets all night. They could not get places to sleep. Persons that live on the Avenue rented the windows and some built stands on the street and rennet them out. Sherman's Army received the most praise for being the best drilled of the two armies. It took them from nine in the owning until three in the afternoon before they got through…we will have a great hanging time here very soon of all the persons that had a hand in the murder of the President…it [is] most time to do something to put a stop to the proceedings. We have laws…they ought to be enforced…Kennard Cox." The original stamped transmittal cover is included plus the previous owner's genealogical notes. Overall fine.
