War-date Autograph Letter, 2pp. quarto, April 27, 1865, New York, and reads in part: “...Permit an old fried to say - Peace is better than war- that there is no such thing as dishonorable peace... ‘dishonorable peace’ is the jargon of thieves who are profiting by the war - an awful phrase to prevent a good which because it is good bad men oppose. I have supported you politically for many years past. I dare say you recongize my handwriting...I desire to say, boldly inaugurate peaceful measures for the reconstruction of the Union. Peacefully you can do it...Lead events do not permit events to lead you. Our poor friend Lincoln allowed others to create events. and he followed them. Where is he now? Do not consult the wretches around you. They caare more for their own intersts than they do for you. They are wedded to the war...if you make yourself the embodiment of peace you will be as much beloved as war is detested...” Fold split, else very good condition.
