Newspaper, The Port Folio. Volume IV. No. 29. Philadelphia, Saturday, July 21, 1804. 8 pages. 9 3/4" x 12 7/8". The paper was known for being very pro-Federalist. This issue was focused on the untimely death of Alexander Hamilton caused by dueling with Aaron Burr. The paper covers relevant correspondence between Burr and Hamilton. It begins with Burr’s letter to Hamilton demanding that Hamilton explain an apparent calumny uttered against him which subsequently appeared in published letter. It later chronicles other letters from Burr’s and Hamilton’s lawyers, parts of Hamilton’s will that shine a positive light on him, and Hamilton’s last confession about having no “ill-will” towards Burr, and other excerpts from newspapers giving details on the funeral precessions and the events in general. A superb and scarce issue devoted to the Memorial of Alexander Hamilton, published just 9 days after his death resulting from a bullet wound received in his famous duel with Aaron Burr. Some light foxing. Fine.
