Poster, “AZAPO Rally, Rally, Rally, June 16, Decade of RESISTANCE,”18’ x 21-1/2”, red/black, fine, in frame. This poster advertises the June 16, 1986 rally by the Azanian People’s Organization, or AZAPO, an anti-apartheid resistance group that exerted political and social influence in South Africa in the years leading up to the end of apartheid. A thought provoking and emotional advertisement shows a resistor carrying the body of a young black boy.The Azanian People's Organisation (AZAPO) is a South African political party. It was founded in 1978 out of three organisations: the Black People's Convention (BPC), the South African Students' Organisation (SASO) and the Black Community Programmes (BCP). These were three of the 17 black consciousness organisations that were banned on Wednesday, 19 October 1977 for their role in the armed resistance and the 16 June 1976 Soweto uprisings.
