A very rare Union soldier's battle letter, 3pp. 8vo., on "True To The Union" patriotic stationery, Pvt. Josiah Whipkey, Co. L, 6th West Virginia Vols., Rowlesburg, Preston Co., [West] Virginia, May 11, 1863 to his brother concerning a little known about skirmish at Rowlesburg, West Virginia on April 26, 1863 when Confederate Gen. William "Grumble" Jones tried to capture the important, Union held, railroad link and Tray Run Viaduct at Rowlesburg, reading, in part: "…I would let you know something about our little fite at this place on the 26 day of April…the rebels come in on to sides of us and they tuck about 3 hundred…they lost about 30 killed…we took fore prisoners…we had two taken prisoner and on Monday we started after them…went to King Wood…to Morgantown and then to Uniontown…we took the cars to Pittsburg and Wheeling…now we are on the mountain three miles from town…give my love to all the girls out thare…". Whipkey's phonetic spelling has been corrected. Minor spotting, else VG.
