Pair of war-date Union soldier Autograph Letters Signed, they read in part: “...[5/3/1863, Winchester, Kentucky]You have doubtless seen by the papers that there has been a little fight in Ky. I hardly think that any of the 9th Corps has been engaged in it. At least we knew nothing of the affair till a day or two afterwards. We understand Gen. Burnside is coming into the field again, if that is the case he will likely commence a campaign where some of us soldiers will get a pill from the rebs that will give some a furlough or a discharge...If all slavery was like Ky slavery I think there would not be much suffering among the blacks, for really a poor man in New England has a much harder time earning his livlihood than a Ky. slave has...While the slaves are as lazy as anyone could wish to see, a man having no care how things go along knowing that their masters must look after them, in fact they appear to work like oxen, will jog along taking things very easy indeed. If a labouring man at home did not more work than one of them he could not earn salt for his grub. But for all that I dont advocate for slavery for I know that what few slaves we saw in Va. appeared very different from these in Ky. Here they are seldom sold, generally where it is a sheriffs sale when anyone of them are sold. There was a woman of about 40 years of age sold in Winchester the other day for the small sum of $50. And a boy of 14 for $30...I hope we will soon have good news from Gen. Hookers army. I saw by the papers that he had crossed the river, I do hope he will be successful in what ever he undertakes...[6/20/1863 Milldale near Yazoo River , Mississippi] Part of our brigaded crossed the river in a steamer to the left of Gen. Grant’s lines. And our regt. was loaded aboard ready to cross when we had orderes to return which we did... We are now about two miles from the Yazoo and in the rear of Vicksburg about eight miles...We are near Haynes Bluff and the ground we are now on was occuppied by the enemy a month ago...There are several very large guns near the landing that were dismounted and rendered useless by the enemy when they left this place. We have any quantity of troops here and every body feels confident that Vicksburg must fall sooon...they are firing now while I write...I should think some of the time there must have been as many as 100 shots a minute, for it sounds like a continuous roll of thunder...” Fine condition.
