Family collection of George Robinson who enlisted 1/11/64 into H Company of Massachusetts 57th Infantry and wounded 7/12/64 at Petersburg. he was discharged for these wounds 7/5/1865. Robinson was a member of both the GAR Post #10 in Worcester and GAR Post #164 in Belvidere, Il. The collections consists of Civil War dated letters, large collection of GAR Badges, paper ephemra, and photographs. Five War dated Letters Home. Each letter is sealed, written in pencil and has a transcription. They include: (1) April 21st, 1864, 3pp., advises how he arrived at Snopolas, boats, trains through Philadelphia and Baltimore. ... plus, (2) May 10, 1864, pencil 4pp., in part, “C Tyman is up to Fredericksburg with Col. Bartlett. He got shot in the side of his head but not bad ... We was in battle all day. Regt. got cut up bad. I helped carry Col. and Major off the field. they commenced fighting Thursday morning ... I will tell you a few that fell ... Killed, Bill Colwell, Chas. Leonard, Sam Lavering, Mr. Puffer ... Died, Clark, Johnson, Smith. ... I saw this morning Brigade General Stevenson fall dead. He was under a tree where he slept last night. He fell on his blanket it was a sharp shooter ... Major General Sedgwick was killed this morning....” ... plus, (3) June 7, 1864, 1pp., Robinson sends a letter of introduction for Davis Davis and requests his mother provide Davis with food and clothing. ... plus, (4) On US Sanitary Commission letterhead, City point, July 4, 1864, 2pp., in part, “I was wounded last night in the left foot. the ball passed through my foot between my instep and big toe, between two joints ... It don’t pain me .. I am here at the hospital and wobble around on crutches ...” ... plus, (5) Fort Schuyler, July 18, 1864, 3pp., in part, “My foot is getting along first rate. the Dr. took alot of the little bones out of my foot. I will send you one of them. please give it to the folks and tell them to keep it for me. ...” He then writes of family/friends at home. Thirty GAR Badges. The most important and significant is dangler is made of 14c gold (40 grams) and decorated with 7 diamond chips. In mint condition, the dangler has a solid gold spread winged eagle, from which drops the solid gold diamond studded star. The center of the star has an enamel ring surrounding soldiers and words “Grand Army of the Republic, 1861 Veteran 1866. the dangler is backed with a cloth flag and is inscribed on the back, “Presented to George A. Robinson, Commander Department of Illinois, GAR, June 7, 1934.” Robinson would die the following year. Stunning piece. ... plus, Dangler, “Staff of R.B. Mass GAR,” with “Bean” on a pot. nd., VG. ... plus, Pinback, of Lincoln profile “With Malice Toward None and Charity for All”, and on the reverse, “The Civil War, 1861-1865.” nd., np., VG. ... plus, Dangler (ribbon and pin missing) “65th Annual Encampment Aurora, June 2, 3, 4, 1931. VG. plus ..., Dangler, “Representitve, George A. Robinson, 68th Annual Encampment, Galesburg ILL., June 5, 6, 7, 1934,” VG. ... plus, Same as previous, VG. ... plus, same as previous, still pinned to original card. Geore A. Robinson received a Military funeral. Include is his cased 48 Star Flag, with stitched stars. The flag is cased and has a metal badge, “GEORGE A. ROBINSON”. A pair of Bayonettes: (1) bayonet with Civil War scabbard, the leather belt has a brass U.S. insignia, 16” blade, VG ... plus (2) Unique training bayonet with soldered disc on tip. A pair of Muskets to include; (1) .70 caliber, 40.5" rifled round barrel. Complete with iron ramrod. Bore has strong rifling. Barrel finish is a dark mottled plume, lock and hammer are an even dark brown. Stock remains crisp at the lock and flat, but has moderate service dents and dings. ...plus, (2) a similar Musket. However, 2” of end of the barrell is blown-out. Paper items include; Personalized Book, “Manual of the Civil War and Key to the Grand Army of the Republic and Kindred Societies”, By J. Worth Carnahan. With personalized cover, “Military Records of George A. Galesburg Illinois, June 5, 6, & 7, 1934.” On the 1st page is a full page image of Robeinson “George A. Robinson” Department Commander”. Also, two silk bookmarks, each with Robinson’s image and detail of the encampment, VG. ... plus, Framed document “Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic” issued to Robinson, ... plus, Framed document “Commonwealth of Massachusetts” attesting that Robinson served the State.... plus, Framed George A. Robeinson’s “Discharge” document, July 5, 1865... plus, Robinson’s marriage announcement, ...plus, Manuscript document certifying Robinson’s enlistment, ... plus, various newspaper clippings including Robinson’s death announcement. there are another 10-12 minor paper items.
