MILES, Nelson Appleton (1839-1925) was an American military general who served in the American Civil War, the American Indian Wars, and the Spanish–American War. From 1895 to 1903, he served as the last Commanding General of the United States Army before the office was abolished. War-date Autograph Endorsement Signed “Nelson A. Miles Brig Gen. U.S.V.” approving a communication on verso of Autograph Letter Signed by George Washington Scott (1841-1922), Major, 1pp. quarto, Head Quaters 61st Regt. N.Y.V., front of Petersburg, Virginia, September 22, 1864, addressed to Captin Fred. Cochen, and reads in part: “...I take pleasure in acknowledging the worth of Capt. Fred Cochen late of my regiment as a man and officer, during his term of service in the Regt, in action and in camp...” Very good condition.
