A great pair of home front letters, totaling 8pp. 8vo., (one incomplete) written by Catherine Knox to her husband, "Sargent J. C. Knox, Berryv Vill, Verginia by way of harpers fairy, Comp. I, 147 regt. Ind. Vol. to follow the regt." reading, in small part: "…[Spartans Burg, Ind., April 3, 65]…I got a letter from you…that was written at Columbus. I was glad to hear…that you were getting along all right and could eat so heartily after them black cooks…I wish you was here tonight. I would bite a piece out of you…I would serve you so bad…I think of you all day and dream of you all night…old Jess Brite…went to Mary Ann Harnings and to Nancy Mires and tride to get in and scare them very bad. He was at Nancies a few days before and wanted to marry her. She didn't talk like marrying and…he said he would give her two dollars to let him do some other way and if that wasn't enough he would give her more. Folks thinks that…she gave him encouragement's or he would not went back. She cust like a good fellow. The men is having a cite of fun over it. Mary ann says the reason then men is getting down on them is because they wont play ass with them. Mary Ann has been telling that he come here and scared me. I went to her about it…she said Martha Harlan told her first. I told her it wasn't so…then she said it was a god damned hell fired lie. She never said such a thing…then she cust a blew streak libinglish…Alther Corbet went with me. I told her I wanted he to tend to her own business and quit lying on me…he has never interrupted me and some thinks he dint them, but I think he did for Polly Clark told me he insulted her two or three times when he was drunk…[wish there was more, but the letter ends here]…[June 25, 1865]….I am going to Winchester this week to get license or get a divorce or going a trading or something else…Ett Bowen says tell you that Jim has ready fixed her and if you don't hurry home she is going to hire old Jessy Brite to fix me. All the drafted men that was in the regt. that Sam was in is discharged and sent home…I cant keep from balling when I see so many solgers at home and you cant…come…I gave Frank Morgan that note you had against that nigger to collect for me…he paid me out of the store…Catherine Knox…".
