A great fall of Richmond letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Addison F. Thompson, Co. D, 8th Conn. Vols., Richmond, Va., April 5, 1865, to his brother, in part: "…I am today in the limits of the city of Richmond. I can now head my letter Richmond which I have so long desired to do…I had kept along with the skirmish line but I got weary and did not keep up [as] they went so fast. I was on picket when we started and they formed the skirmish line and after they heard that the city was surrendered they went double quick most of the way but I was tired out so I stopped and joined the Regt. There was not a gun fired. When we got there they were gone. If we had had to fight to go in…we could never have taken the city. It is very strongly fortified…I am on guard at a man's house guarding his property. They are fine folks…thank God for his goodness in giving us the victory. I could not help shedding tears of joy when I heard that the city was surrendered…the war is nearly over and I will be at home again…A. F. Thompson." Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Overall VG
