A complete Bound Volume of Harper’s Weekly, January 7, 1865 through December 30, 1865, 52 complete 16 page issues, tightly bound in VG condition. The issues cover the closing of the War, the Lincoln Assassination and the beginning of reconstruction. Mosby” January 28, 1865, Inside, "New Year's Day in Savannah--General Sherman's Reception at Mr. Green's" "Christmas-Day in Savannah--General Sherman's Christmas Dinner at Mr. Green's" February, 4, 1865, "Admiral Porter's Fleet Celebrating the Surrender of Fort Fisher"; a dramatic doublepage centerfold: "The Assault and Capture of Fort Fisher" February, 11, 1865, Inside, "Burning of the Smithsonian Institute at Washington" February, 18, 1865, Inside, "Scene in the House on the Passage of the Proposition to Amend the Constitution", being the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution outlaws slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. February, 25, 1865, Inside, "John H. Rock, Colored Counselor" which has a same-titled article which includes: "We give on this page a portrait of John H. Rock, the colored lawyer who was on February 2 admitted as a practitioner before the Supreme Court of the United States March 4, 1865, Front, "Sherman's March Through South Carolina--Road at the Swamp Crossings." March 11, 1865, Front page has two prints: "Before Petersburg--Issuing Rations of Whisky and Quinine" and "Admiral Porter's Boats Removing torpedoes & Buoying the Channel in Cape Fear River" March 18, 1865, Front, "President Lincoln Taking the Oath At His Second Inauguration, March 4, 1865"; The doublepage centerfold is captioned: "President Lincoln's Reinauguration at the Capitol" March 25, 1865, Inside, "The Triumph In New York--The Procession Passing Around the South End of the Park" "Gen. Phil Sheridan Moving Up the Valley" "Bridge on the Military Railroad from City Point at Hatcher's Run" April 1, 1865, Front, "General Sherman's Entry Into Columbia, South Carolina". The doublepage centerfold has six: "Scenes In Columbia, South Carolina, the Morning After the Fire" April 8, 1865, Front, "Raising the Stars & Stripes Over the Capitol at Columbia, South Carolina" April 15, 1865, Inside, "General Sherman & Staff Crossing Broad River, South Carolina" "The Battle at Black River, Near Averysborough, North Carolina "Logan's Corps Crossing the Saluda River Above Columbia..." April 22, 1865, Front, "General Sheridan at the Battle of Five Forks" and also: "Cavalry Charge at the Battle of Five Forks". April 29, 1865, Front has a large and dramatic illustration of "J. Wilkes Booth" plus a lengthy article headed: 'The Murder Of The President' making this a nice display issue. The very dramatic doublepage centerfold by Thomas Nast shows Liberty weeping on Lincoln's coffin. May 6, 1865, Front, "President Lincoln At Home" showing him reading a book to his son. This very image was made into a postage stamp by the United States Post Office. Inside has a dramatic full page print captioned: "Scene at the Death Bed of President Lincoln" showing many standing around him. Another full pg. print is captioned: "President Lincoln's Funeral Procession in Washington City" and yet another captioned: "President Lincoln's Funeral--Citizens View the Body at the City Hall, New York." May 13, 1865, Front, "Andrew Johnson" who succeeded Abraham Lincoln as President. Inside, are several prints within which relate to the Abraham Lincoln funeral and the hunting & killing of John Wilkes Booth. May 20, 1865, Front, “The Assassination" and another "President Lincoln's Funeral"; Inside has a full page print: "President Lincoln's Funeral--Reception Of the Remains at Chicago, Illinois", and two half page prints: "President Lincoln's Funeral. May 27, 1865, Front, "Lewis Payne the Assassin" under guard, with text headed: "Capture of Davis", "Payne the Assassin" and "President Lincoln's Burial". June 3, 1865, Front, Front, “Check-Mate!” showing Jeff. Davis playing a game of chess with Uncle Sam, with war generals as the playing pieces. Inside, "Trial of the Conspirators” June 10, 1865, Front, "The Grand Review at Washington--General Meade & Staff Passing the Principal Stand" June 17, 1865, Front, "Hon. William H. Seward, Secretary of State" June 24, 1865, Front, "Lieutenant-General Grant visiting General Scott at Cozzens's Hotel, West Point" July 1, 1865, Front, "Monument Erected on the Field of the First Battle of Bull Run" and: "Consecration of the Bull Run Monuments--Reading the Service". July 8, 1865, The doublepage centerfold is a very nice Thomas Nast print with 8 vignettes titled: "Peace On Earth and Good Will Towards Men -- The Fourth of July, Eighteen Hundred and Sixty-Five". July 15, 1865, Inside, Winslow Homer titled: 'Holiday In Camp--Soldiers Playing 'Foot-Ball' " July 22, 1865, Inside, "Execution of the Conspirators at Washington" which shows four of them hanging. Inside, The facing page has seven related prints, including those captioned: "Execution of the Conspirators--Clergymen Officiating on the Scaffold" "Execution of the Conspirators--Adjusting the Rope" and "Execution of the Conspirators--Springing of the Trap" which shows the condemned on the scaffold, including Harold, Atzerott, Payne and Mrs. Surratt. There are also prints of "Lewis Payne" "David Harold" & "J.W. Atzerott" July 29, 1865, Inside, "The Destruction by Fire of Barnum's American Museum in New York" is accompanied by a half page: "Ruins of Barnum's American Museum as Seen the Morning After the Fire". August 5, 1865, Inside, full pages by famed artist Thomas Nast captioned: "Pardon" showing the Liberty figure considering pardon for the Confederacy; and "Franchise--And Not This Man?" showing the Liberty figure with a Black soldier who had lost a leg. August 12, 1865, Double Inside, "The Atlantic Telegraph Cable" which has 9 vignettes celebrating the success of the cable stretching from the Nova Scotia to England, and includes images of Ben Franklin and Prof. Morse. August 19, 1865, The doublepage centerfold is a nice print with 11 vignettes captioned: "Sketches On Board the United States Naval School Ship 'Sabine' " August 26, 1865, Inside, the most notable prints would be the two full page prints by noted artist Winslow Homer, titled: "Our Watering Places--The Empty Sleeve at Newport" showing a Civil War veteran with one arm missing, and: "Our Watering Places--Horse Racing at Saratoga". September 2, 1865, Inside, "Wall Street & Broadway--Ways of Getting & Spending Money" showing many vignettes. September 9, 1865, Inside, "Lieutenant-General Grant's Reception at Galena, Illinois" and another full page: "Whitefield Preaching in Moorfields, A.D. 1742" September 16, 1865, Front, "The Court Room in Which Capt. Wirz, the Andersonville Jailer, is being Tried at Washington". The very dramatic doublepage centerfold is captioned: "Andersonville Prison Scenes Illustrating Captain Wirz's Trial" which includes 13 scenes of torture & starvation. September 23, 1865, Front, "Champ Ferguson & His Guard", the Kentucky guerrilla arrested for murder, once a protege of John Morgan. September 30, 1865, Inside, "View of Darlington Court House and the Sycamore Tree Where Amy Spain, the Negro Slave, Was Hung by the Citizens of Darlington, South Carolina" October 7, 1865, Front, "The Naval Festival at Portsmouth, England - Arrival of the French Fleet--The 'Solferino' Saluting the English Flag" October 14, 1865, Front, "President Johnson Pardoning Rebels at the White House" October 21, 1865, Front, "Lieut. Tappan Discovering Dr. Mudd in the Hold of the Steamer 'Thomas A. Scott; Inside, "Trial of Captain Wirz, the Andersonville Jailer, in the Court of Claims, Washington, D.C." October 28, 1865, Inside, "Dacotah Territory - Fort Thompson on the Upper Missouri River, built for the Sioux and Winnebago Agency" "Main Street, Vermilion, Dacotah Territory" "Sioux Falls, Dacotah Territory" "Broadway in Yankton, the Capital of the Dacotah Territory" November 4, 1865, Inside, "Looking at the Eclipse" "Burning of the Michigan Central Freight Depot at Detroit, Michigan" "Shipwrecked Passengers and Crew of the Brig 'Titania' November 11, 1865, Inside, "Execution of Champ Ferguson the Guerrilla at Nashville, Tennessee" November 18, 1865, Inside, certainly the most desired print is the half page vertical print showing a baseball game in action, and showing the full expanse of the field with crowd. The caption reads: "Base-Ball Match Between the 'Athletics' of Philadelphia, Pa. and the 'Atlantics' of Brooklyn, N.Y., Played at Philadelphia, Oct. 30, 1865." November 25, 1865, Inside, certainly the prime feature of this illustrated newspaper is the very nice three-quarter page print captioned: "Champion Nine of the Atlantic Base-Ball Club of Brooklyn, L.I., 1865" showing named prints of each of the baseball players. December 2, 1865, Front, "Burning of Rev. Dr. Tyng's Church, Corner of 16th Street and Rutherford Place, New York". December 9, 1865, Front, "Grand Reception of Lieutenant-General Grant at the Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York City". December 16, 1865, Inside, doublepage centerfold: "Central Park, New York City--The Grand Drive" December 23, 1865, Front, "Hon. John T. Hoffman, Mayor-Elect of New York City" with an article on him. Also an article: "Thanksgiving at Five Points". December 30, 1865, Inside, doublepage centerfold done by famed artist Thomas Nast, titled: "Merry Christmas To All", showing 8 vignettes of a Christmas theme with the central focus being a great portrait of Santa Claus with a pipe in hand.
