War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Elisha J. Humphries, Phillips Legion Cavalry, Co. A “Governor’s Horse Guards” of Georgia, 2pp. quarto, Bluffton, South Carolina, February 1, 1862, and reads in part: “...We are about 20 miles from Hardeevill. That is our company and Capt. Puckets. The balance of our legion is still at Hardeeville and we are in a sorta ticklish place down here. Bluffton is one of the prettiest little towns...but it is entirely deserted by the inhabitants as there is but two families living here and only the men of these families. All the women have left some time ago. The Yankees are about six or eight miles below here. They took an island here and they took about 1500 Negroes with the island. The people took most of their furniture with them with tables, sofas, etc and one family left a piano here for the Yankees...Tell Pa he must stand up to Henry until he gets the negroes broke. If he has to half kill them and until they get so they will not be giving you smart words or any saucy words and he will oblige his obedient son...” Fine condition.
