War-date Confederate Prisoner of War Autograph Letter Signed by William Propst (1831-1919) 57th North Carolina Infantry, POW at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Hatchers Run, WIA at Gettysburg, 1pp. quarto, Johnson’s Island, Ohio, April 6, 1864, and reads in part: “...I have got a very sore arm...The sore is as large as the palm of my hand....I hope and pray this will come to your hand and find you and my dear daughters Mary & Alice & son all in the land of the living and in good health. Also Columbus & your servants...The health of the officers of the 57th Regt is pretty good at present...My friends in old Cabarrus thought that I would turn traitor to my country and my God by taken the oath to Abraham’s Government. No never...” Very good condition. 2nd. Lt. William Propst served in the Civil War. He enlisted on 7th. July, 1862 in Cabarrus County in Company "F" 57th. NCST. He enlisted when Company F organized in Concord in July 1862. Propst was captured at the Battle of Chancellorsville, May 4, 1863, but was exchanged in time to rejoin his regiment for the Gettysburg campaign. He was shot in the side at Gettysburg and was one of the thousands of wounded Confederates abandoned when the Army of Northern Virginia retreated at the conclusion of the battle. He was imprisioned until exchanged on May 8, 1864. He returned to duty, and was recaptured again at the Battle of Hatcher's Run, Virginia, on February 6, 1865. He was imprisoned at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC., & Fort Delaware, DE. He was released on June 8, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
