War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Calvin Rice, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry, 4pp. octavo, Edisto Island, May 10, 1862, and reads in part: “...Having received my box which is over a month old...the cheese and doughnuts...moldly and I could not eat them so I gave them to the darkey. They would devour them like rats....The ham is in the cook house hanging up which I shall cook tomorrow...Last night myself and a squad of four men surrounded and took two prisoners and took them into tcamp and this morning took them over to the Provost Marshall....They belonged to the 55 Penn Regt. and was smashing in the doors to the negro shanties. ...They open all the boxes before they got here to see that there is no rum in them...” Fine condition.
