Joseph Follet (1843-1907) enlisted as a private in Company G, 1st Missouri Infantry in September 1861. He served through the entire war, being twice wounded in action [at Farmington, Miss. 5/9/62 & New Madrid, Missouri 3/2/62], serving under Generals Sherman, Pope, King and Steedman, and as a nineteen year old he was awarded the Medal of Honor at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, on October 8, 1862, after charging a battery. He later had extensive service during the Indian Wars era The archive consists of (24) various documents regarding Follet’s Civil War activity. To include; (16) War dated documents concerning the recruiting efforts. Thirteen are on printed letterhead “Recruiting Servive, Missouri Vols”. The documents range in date from December1863 to July 1865 and are written from (6) Saint Louis, (6) Chatanooga, (2) Stevenson, Alabama, Lookout Mountain and one with no place. Additionally there are (5) post war documents to include July 23, 1865, reassignment; december 24, 1865, Letter written to Secretary of War Statnton by captain Meadowhall recommending Follet; January 28, 1869, Returns of Quartermaster; October 6, 1885, letter transmitting GAR commision for Follett (commission not present). Military Order memorial service circular, October 10, 1907. And finally (3) documents regarding his commissions, to include; Partially printed Discharge as Corporal, August 31, 1863 “to accept appointment as 2nd Lt...”; Partially printed Discharge as 1st Lieut., July 28, 1865 “by reason of G.O. No. 105...”.manuscript Special Orders No. 22, “... Follett ... hereby relieved... regrets exceedingly the changes ... for whom I have the highest esteem...”.
