A great little-known event of the Gettysburg Campaign, 2 1/3pp. 4to., letter written by Pvt. Charles H. Lancaster, Co. C, 11th New Hampshire Vols. [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., Dec. 13, 1862], Conowingo, MD, July 3, 1863, in part: "…my letter is dated in a new place. Last Sunday afternoon we had orders to pack up in light marching order and be ready to march in about 2 hours…the 2nd division had 20 rounds of cartridges giev[n] to us…then we got into the cars and went to Oxford, Penna…getting a good breakfast which was furnished by the people of the place. The farmers turned out with their wagons and brought us…to this place. We were here to guard the bridge which crosses the Sequehanah River and to keep the rebs from crossing. It is about as wild and out of the way place that ever I was in. It lays between the Cumberland and branch of the Blue Ridge mountains and beats our state for rocks. The place contains a sawmill, 2 taverns and 2 houses…the people furnish us with all that we want. The rebs have not been nearer than 12 miles but we have every thing ready to blew up the bridge in case we can not hold it…I don't know how long we shall stay here…probably until the rebs are drove back out of the state. The people, most of them, [are] loyal, but once in a while we find a reb. One bridge up the river, at Columbia, has been burnt to keep them from crossing…Charles H. Lancaster. P. S. Yesterday we heard that the reb's were on the retreat and forming two strong columns and that Meade had attacked Longstreet's force and was punishing them very hard . I hope it is so. Charles."
