A great Northern Copperhead's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a certain "Orlena", n. p., but near Lowell, Mass.], April 13, 1865, to her Copperhead brother who has gone to Canada, perhaps to avoid the war, reading, in part: "…Mr. Whitehouse of Sweden has runaway. He visited Mrs. Chaplain and made trouble in the family…he hired twenty five dollars of Uncle Bill Kneeland and gave it to Mrs. Chaplain…it is rumored that they have got President Jeff [Davis], but we can hardly believe it…there is another rumor that he [Jeff D.] has gone to England with three hundred thousand dollars worth of gold. They have go[t] Richmond and Lee and his army…they have had a great revival of religion in Fryeburg, Lowell and Waterford…father…is a going to send you some of those pretty beans[?]…you may need some of those little things now you live in Canada. I…forgot to tell you how old Charles and his bride is. Charles is 16 and his bride is 38. The bride gave the bridegroom in as a scholar…I wish that I might…been up there and…look into the foundry. Mrs. Nevers [says] that you looked like nigroes when last you come into [for] your meals…I should like to see some of the poor nigroes for they must be beauties…do you have any Black legs up their. We have plenty of them here and they grow more self righteous every day and say that we Copperheads must skedaddle…we miss your company very much. We wish that you and Mrs. Nevers might happen in…for we live where…there is not much sympathy among the Black legs. We do not know of any that has been killed in the last battle, but there was a terrible slaughter. We are dreading to hear the news for we expect that Uncle Bemis or Aunt Olive's boys…will be killed…Orlena…". VG
