A rare manuscript Confederate Congressional act document, 1p 4to., being, "Form for Retiring Moaled Soldier under act of Congress approved, Feb. 17, 1864", reading, in part: "…know ye that John H. Cole, a private of Capt. Wm. Jackson's Company "D" 22 Va. Battalion of Infantry who was enlisted the 20th of January 1862 to serve one year, since reenlisted for three years or the war is hereby honorably retired from military service with the pay…of a private in the army of the Confederate States. Said soldier was born [Black Walnut] in Halifax County, State of Virginia, is twenty five years old, blond complexion, five feet ten inches high, blue eyes, Dark hair and by occupation when enlisted a Farmer. Given at Medical Examining Board, Heth's Div. this 24th day of November, 1864…Jany. 17, [1865] C. P. S." Signed and made official by Confederate surgeons, J. S. Hubbard, C[aire] B. McGuire, C. Hazel Howard, John Wilson, Jr. and James H. Southall, 55th Virginia [POW Gettysburg, July 3, 1863, after being left behind to care for the wounded. Confined Fort McHenry, Maryland. Returned to his regiment Dec. 2, 1863. Surrender Appomattox, April 9, 1865.] Cole, also served in the 3rd Virginia Cavalry and as part of that command he was severely wounded in the left leg during the Mine Run campaign at the battle of Raccoon Ford, Va. on October 11, 1863. The leg's tibia was fractured crippling Cole. He was discharged as indicated by this document as part of the 22nd Virginia Battalion.
