A great war-date Confederate cavalryman's manuscript pass, 1p. oblong 12mo., "Hd. Qrs. Valley District, [Va.], Oct. 12, 1864, reading, in part: "The following named man is detailed for fifteen days to go to County of Bedford for a fresh horse, viz. Pvt. O.[liver] G. Mead, Co. "A" [Clay Dragoons], 2d Regt. Va. Cav., Wickham's Brigade. By order of Lt. Gen. J. A. Early." Signed and made official by Samuel J. C. Moore, as assistant adjutant general. Endorsed on the left margin, in full: "To take effect from Oct. 13th. S. Griffin, Adjt. 2nd Va. Cav." It should be noted that Pvt. Oliver G. Mead enlisted into the Clay Dragoons, at Liberty, Va., on July 15, 1862. He was wounded in action at the battle of Second Bull Run, August 30, 1862 and became a POW on Sept. 19, 1862 as Lee's army retreat back across the Potomac after his defeat at Antietam. Samuel Johnston Cramer Moore, (1826-1908) was born in Charlottesville and commissioned into the 2nd Virginia Cavalry at the outbreak of war in 1861. He was wounded thrice in action once during the battles of Kernstown, the next time at the battle of Brawner's Farm during the Second Bull Run campaign, and then, finally during the battle of the Wilderness. During his time in service, he served on the staffs of Confederate generals John M. Jones, John R. Jones and Bradley T. Johnson. In the postwar era he served as mayor of Berryville, Va. Samuel Griffin (1840-1907) born in Salem, Roanoke County, Va., he was educated at Kenyon College, Ohio. He enlisted on May 14, 1861 as adjutant in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry. As Moore, he was also thrice wounded in action. Once during the Second Bull Run campaign, again at the close of the Gettysburg campaign and finally at the start of the Mine Run campaign. He surrendered with Lee at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. After the conflict, he became attorney for the Norfolk & Western Railroad Company. Negligible dampstains with some soiling, else VG.
