…Lexington is a village containing about 1200 inhabitants…it is most delightfully situated between two high ranges of mountains, the Blue Ridge…called the North Mountain…a spur of the Allegheny. We are about ten miles from each…the place…is so entirely different from a New England village that I feel quite at a loss in attempting to describe it. The houses are principally of brick. There are few good buildings, most…being very coarse or ill looking. There are three streets intersected by four or five cross streets, these making it a square, but the ground is very irregular…the houses are of all sorts and sizes…there is no great appearance of regularity about the place. The college buildings…a short distance out of the village, on a hill and the Prof's houses, are fine showy buildings…this is the [?] of Washington College, which was founded by Washington himself for the benefit of his native state. It is a very good institution. There is also a Military Institute having about 100 cadets. There is a female Academy too…we have no lack of literary institutions. There are four churches…the Presbyterians are the predominate…our church is not yet five years old…our church numbers about 70…many of the ladies have called on me and appear to be social, refined and sufficiently intellectual to make agreeable companions…I made an excursion to the Natural Bridge which is about 16 miles from this…I was…struck and delighted with the view…when it bursts upon you, you involuntarily stand still…it is difficult to realize that the white limestone of the bridge. Its some 50 to 60 feet thick…the proportions are exquisite…H. S. Brownes. The original tramples cover leaf-fold postmarked "Lexington, Va/ Dec. 19" is included. Minor toning, else VG
