Vols., Camp McHenry, Bowling Green, [KY], Sept. 9, 1862, to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…we have left Nashville…and marched to this place…we done most of the marching by night on acct. of the heat. I was sorry to leave such a good looking place as Nashville. The last day I was there we was busy to fortified the capital…we all got to this place safe. There was 4 regiments of us and 6 pieces of cannon and some cavalry…within 4 miles of this town we had the pleasure to see some of our old friends from Manheim Mounted on their horses and came to meet us…after we marched through town I seen Daniel W. May on the pavement at the hospital. He is still lame yet. We march 1 1/2 mile from town to camp that night…we have a poor place to camp hardly any shade. The rebels cut all the trees down last winter…I met all the boys from…the 9th Pa. Cavalry coming out to see us…they was also much astonished…to see us in such a hardy condition…I wrote a letter to you…the other week, but I thought it got captured…tab this place the government has over one millions of dollars worth of provisions…H. Gibble." VG
