War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Harrison Gibble (Gipple in the CW database), Co. A, 79th Penn. Vols., "In the entrenchments 1 3/4 mile from Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 9, 1864," to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…I am somewhat disappointed with the tobacco I ordered…it is true the cost are high, but Mr. Ensminger is not entitled to more then 48 cents for 2 lbs…packages sent from Lancaster…generally pass from 14 to 25 cents per lbs…I wish Mr. Ensminger would try and get a little better posted up in this new post law…our division had a heavy charge on the rebels last Sunday evening…the Sec'd. Brigade (reg't) lost over 400 men killed and wounded. Our division repulsed the rebels and drove them back…took from 15 to 17 hundred prisoners (nearly all Irish) and one heavy battery of 6 guns. The rebels lost in killed and wounded about 1000 men. The field and fortifications was lined with dead bodies. It was hard work for us to bury them. There is is fighting daily along the lines. We can see all over the town…but it is too dangerous to look much out o[f] the fortifications. They can reach over with their sharp rifles. The railroad is finished and the cars run up to our lines. They brought 4 cannons of 100 Lbs. shells…I hope the rebels will soon give up and lay down their arms…we then can surround them or starve them to death…H. Gibble." VG
