War-date Union cavalryman's letter written by Pvt. Jeremiah H. Obetz, Co. G, 9th Penn. Cavalry, "Camp [Dunham] near Bowling Green, [KY], Oct., 1862," 3pp. 4to., to his friend Henry C. Gringrich, reading, in part: "…you further stated that you expect to enlist before long…I will inform you that I was never so tired of soldiering…I am [in] the service now for 14 months and never seen any Rebels of any amount…the 11 inst. we left for Russellville and from there to Trenton and…we came on the Rebel pickets at 5 o'clock in the morning…our company was advance guard band so we crippled one man on picket post then the rest of the pickets made the alarm…they got ready for a fight. Then they brought the column up and then our major [Joseph M. Kennedy]…was fooling around for about 2 hours…moved slowly toward camp which was 3 miles…we was within 2 miles of their camp. The major ordered the artillery and commenced to shell them so they…skedaddle[d]…if he would [have] ordered his men to make a charge…we would have got every damned one of them as one of the prisoners stated. They made preparations to surrender…he ought to be court marshaled for not letting us into them…you never heard such a hollering forward, forward was all the cry, but of no use. He would not let us into them…if we travel for 20 years I will never se the day for such an opportunity…we was in…Red Springs, Tenn. and took 100 prisoners and about 8 or 12 hundred Blls. of flour which we burnt and thrower into the river…we drove 15 hundred of Morgan's men but could not catch up to them. J. K. Waltman, [Capt. [Jacob k. Waltman, Co. G, 9th Penn. Cav.] was commander at Red Springs and Major Cennedy [Joseph M. Kennedy] was in command at the Trenton affair, KY. He is major of the 8 Ky. Cavalry. I will also inform you that two of our men deserted [Pvts. George Termin and William Trout, Oct. 19, 1862] on account of that Trenton affair…I give them much credit for it…Major Cennedy [Kennedy] is commander of a brave set of Boys and will never hear the last of the Trenton affair…J. H. Obetz." Minor toning, else VG
