War-date Union Army pass issued to the brother of John Janney, the president of Virginia's Secession Convention in 1861, being a party-printed official "Not Transferrable" pass, 1p. 12mo., reading, in full: "Head quarters Military District, Washington, D. C., May 28, 1863. Pass The Bearer, Mr. C[.harles] P. Janney within the lines of the U. S. Forces to & from Alexandria. Reason: to visit friends. This pass will expire one return trip May 29th 1863. By order of the John H. Martingale, Brig. Gen. and Military Governor." Signed and made official by Capt. James Eglinton Montgomery, as assistant adjutant general. On the verso is a lengthy printed oath of allegiance signed "Chas. P. Janney" along with a description that notes he is a six foot tall, blue eyed, 24 years old man. Some soiling, else VG
