A good war-date Union signal corps letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James E. Donley, Co. K, 142nd Penn. Vols., "Signal Corps", Dec. 6, 1863, in part: "…we had just returned from the south side of the Rapidan River…the 26th of November we broke camp at Brandy Station and crossed the Rapidan. Marched into the pike leading from Chancellorsville to Gordonsville…our troops formed line of battle and some little fighting was going on. We expected a great fight, but then we were ordered back & recrossed the river…it is not easy to describe any object of the move across the river, probably to prevent the enemy from reinforcing Bragg while Grant gained a complete victory. As to the truth of the starvation in Richmond I can hardly imagine it to be so. Their prisoners are clothed better than I have ever before seen them…I should be glad to hear [of] their starvation…it would bring them to yield…to our Union again…James E. Donley." VG The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
