War-date Union sodier Autograph Letter Signed by John H. Gray, Co. D, 19th Indiana Battery, 4pp. folio, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, January 22, 1863, with cover, and reads in part: “...our Brigade came near being taken prisoners....They fell back and took a position 14 miles from Murfreesboro near Milton on a hill. Here they fought the enemy for two hours as fast as they could fire. The Rebels under Morgan were Cavalry and mounted infantry with 4 pieces of artillery making eight regiments and a battery. Our forces were but four regiments and two guns. They charged us in front and in both flanks, thus surrounding us. But we are made of the true stuff and consequently repulsed them with great loss on their part...when they heard cheering on the pike that each man was to do his best at hollowing and the artillery was to play with greater activity than ever. Thus indicating a reinforcement. The deception worked like a charm and the Rebels skedaddled as usual but not until they had left between one and two hundred killed and wounded...Our battery shot 200 rounds and the infantry expended 30 rounds a piece and if the Rebs had made another attack, they would have taken our men on account of ammunition running out. But happily the Rebs got their fill and fell back. The prisoners we took saying that it was not the intention of Morgan to fight but to take forces by surprise...Our Capt rides a white horse and the action he saw a Rebel riding a white horse upon which he remarked that no man except himself could ride a white charger, so saying he leveled one of the twelve pound pieces at him and the Rebel Rider fell dead from the saddle...” Fine condition.
