War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Jacob Pfautz, Co. H, 203rd Penn. Vols., "Six miles east of Richmond on the New Market Road, Oct. 29, 1864," to his friend Henry C. Gingrich, in part: "…I received your letter yesterday morning on the battlefield. We had a fight with Rebs, but it was no big fight. We just kept them there [so] that they could not send reinforcements to the other places where they were fighting. They were fighting along the whole line. The report is that old Grant has took Petersburg and at Fair Oaks they took four thousand prisoners and drove the enemy back. We had only skirmishing. Four of our companies were in it…four of them got wounded. One of them died, but the others are only slightly wounded…we were pretty near into [the enemy.] They shelled us. The shells passed…within a few feet, but we were laying flat on the ground. If we would be standing they would hit some of us. This is the second time that we got shelled….the war is pretty near played out. The rebels desert and come in our lines…sometimes as high as a dozen come on [in] one squad. Last week one came over and he said that as sure as Old Abe gets elected. They will stop fighting right away…it is no danger that he wont get elected again. I will do all I can for him…I like it well so far. Our old Colonel wants to bet fifty dollars that we will be all at home till New Year…Jacob Pautz." A bit light, else VG.
