War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 2pp. legal size folio, written by Pvt. Daniel E. Gingrich, Co. H, 203rd Penn. Vols., "Before Richmond", [Va.], Oct. 31, 1864, to his brother Henry C. Gingrich, in part: "…I received it the 28th-day after our fight…was done on the 27th, 28th & 29th on our right at Fair Oaks…we were very lucky boys…we lost only 9 men, two of whom died & the other 7 are in a recovering condition. The Jonnies poured grape & canister into us like hail. Gen. Pennpacker ordered us back. He said we all get killed there & [that we] could never take the place the way we attacked it. On Saturday a brigade in the 18th Corps tried it & lost 900 men. Our men…did not lose the battle or any of the battles. There is no such a thing as loosing a battle in Butler's command. We may loose more men than the enemy…in making our assaults…but [it] is not said that we lost as a general thing. For we took about 2 miles of their works at Fair Oaks while Grant took the Danville R. R. and not less than 15,000 prisoners…we…run all day in the rain…water shoe deep. I took cold. I have a very sore throat and get chills occasionally. The Doctor says it may turn into a fever yet…I received two letters from Gavy each containing lots of tickets and a bundle of document. There is continual cannonading day & night. I can not describe it better than a heavy thunderstorm…the war must soon be over…Daniel E. Gingrich, Company H, 203d Regt. P. V…". Minor soiling, else VG
