Autograph Letter Signed by Phillip Dressel, UCV member and Charleston business owner, 2pp. quarto, on his stationary, addressed to his GAR comrades in Massachusetts thanking them for their financial assistance after the Charleston Earthquake, and reads in small part: “... we offer sincere thanks for their liberality and substantial good will. Their footprints were scarcely cold upon the floors of our Armory when the terrible calmaity of the 31st of August shattered and shocked its very foundations and left it more dilapidated than four years of storm or shot and shell of the late civil discord. Our Comrades of Boston learning our misfortune came to our rescue and by their munificient gift paved the way for other generous spirits to assist us in repairing which thanks to our many friends is now complete. Our hearts go to our Comrades sweet flowers of peace, grow proudly over the grave were civil discord lies buried...” Fine condition. The 1886 Charleston earthquake occurred about 9:50 p.m. local time August 31, 1886 with an estimated moment magnitude of 6.9–7.3 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of X (Extreme). The intraplate earthquake caused 60 deaths and between $5 million and $6 million in damage to 2,000 buildings in the Southeastern United States.
