Civilian Letter, written by Maria Butner, Bethania North Carolina, May 24, 1853 to her brother, 4pp., with original cover, VG. Maria advises her brother of several financial transacrions including sale of guns, horses and land. Most interesting is “You want to know the price of negro boys. Father bids one write that they are selling very high, some quit young at 1000$ & upward. Even elderly negroes sell at eight hundred and more. He would like to buy one but thinks them too high at present.
