War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 5pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Green Pond, S. C., Dec. 8, 1862, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…Frank is on picket. We send out pickets now for a week at a time & our men like it much better. My company pickets at Combahee Ferry & at Coffer Hope, a landing in a creek some six or seven mile beyond the ferry. Frank now at the former place…I will explain the custom of picketing on coast…we send five men to these two places at a time. They generally keep two men in watch at a time during the night & in the day…most of them are up & on the lookout…day…does not require so much vigilance as it does at night…this picketing is mainly all the duty our men have to do…camp is some ten to fifteen mile above the picket posts where the enemy are likely to land…we may soon have to go forth again to drive the insolent & conceited foe from our sacred soil. We are now much better prepared…than we were a short time ago when our gallant Genl. Walker (then Col. Col) drove them back to their camps from old Pocotaligo with but a handful of men…the enemy actually had in that battle some twenty odd to our one & yet we fought him for more than half a day killing & wounded over four hundred of them with the small loss of only fifteen killed & about twice as many wounded. The house of God was visible then as it was in the Bible…our cause being a just one &…in God we will go continually for rights & liberties & will fear no evil…Ivey Youman is with me this morning in my log cabin…he is a first rate soldier & a good friend of mine…A. B. Mulligan." Minor toning, else VG.
