War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Wilmington, [N. C.], Aug. 31, 1863, to his mother, in part: "I left Charleston on Saturday…it is difficult now to get transportation for horses…when I left Charleston…I sent Simon to Spartansburg…he ought to have arrived with you last evening. I sent by him my suit & two bottles of green paint to paint the new blinds…let me know when Simon arrives. I gave him $10 to pay his way from Kingsville to Spartanburg. He will give you…[the] balance left from the $10…about [the] two cannons we have. They were made a present to the government by a firm of Jno. Fraser & Co. of Charleston (had I continued in business instead of becoming a poor soldier I should have made such magnificent presents to my Country…the guns weigh each, twenty two hundred tons, throw shot, or rather long square end bolts weighing 650 Lbs. each. The are of English manufacture recently imported into this port…one of them is already in Charleston & the other piece soon to be sent on. They are to be put on our battery (White Point Garden) in Charleston & will destroy the strongest gun boats & iron clads in the world…I never thought such guns culled be made. The Yankees have no such guns…A. B. Mulligan." VG.
