War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Kenansville, [N. C.], Sept 30, 1863, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…to expect to…attend an entertainment given by the ladies of this village in behalf of our sick soldiers in my camp. I have also promised to visit my friend Mr. Fraser…this is the one who daughters I have written you about…I am slow in getting acquainted with the village ladies for the reason that I have not been invited to call on them. I have always seen to keep out of the company until I have a proper license to go into it. When I go into the country I receive hearty invitations to dine with the people and to spend as much time as I can with them. The country people have been very hospitable. I have non doubt that the villagers are equally so, but do not show it so readily…court is in session at this place…I heard a most lengthy and able speech…from a Col. McRae…who is a candidate for congress. He is very recently from France and England where he has been for some time acting as an agent for the state of N. C. to purchase supplies, etc. He is very intelligent and is well posted as to the feelings of both France & England respecting our Confederacy and gave…encouragement…relative to the present feelings and probable action of their governments toward our republic. He also assures us that…before next April we will have one of the best fleets known on the waters. Let us trust…his expectations will be realized & our country [?] with all the world by May or June next…he gave the submissionists & deconstructionists fits & he used up the croaker, the best I have ever heard…Alfred…".
