War-date Confederate cavalry officer's battle letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Stoney Creek Depot Petersburg & Weldon R. R.", June 30, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "…for the last two days & nights we have been constantly on the go after the Yankees. We have completely broken up the whole party consisting of about 5000…commanded by Wilson. We have captured, so far, about 700, all their artillery & wagons and the balance of them are scattered over the country like a parcel of lost sheep. We are gathering them in constantly. We have them pretty well broken up. All the Yankee cavalry in Virginia…our Rail (Road) will soon be open again & remain so…Petersburg is the only difficulty now. Grant's army are entrenched within shelling distance of that city and are shelling it constantly day & night. I fear that Genl. Lee will not be able to dislodge them as they have…Grant cannot meet Lee in battle again this summer & depends almost entirely upon surrounding Richmond & starving it out. This he will be disappointed in as his cavalry have been ran down & whipped at every point by Genl. Hampton. Until this summer the cavalry in Va. have down comparatively but little good. It has been our good fortune to do much to save our country and although we have suffered much and have undergone server fatigue and hardships we have fought more hard battles & gained more victories than ever has been done by all the cavalry ever engaged since the war commenced. I keep Simon constantly with me & make him wait on me & attend to my horses. Frank has not yet joined us. He was at Kenansville about two weeks ago…our loss is very small in the recent fights. We soon routed the enemy & have kept them running ever since & now five men can capture fifty of them [as] they are so completely demoralized…A. B. Mulligan." Minor spotting, else VG
