War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "In Camp at Malone's Farm", July 17, 1864, to his mother, etc, in part: "…many of our officers have gotten furloughs, some from wounds & some from sickness, but…thank God I am safe…Hampton's command is [s]till here doing…picketing, etc…if we could only get enough feed for our horses we would do finely…our horses are fairing badly. Out of 51 animals in my company 25 of them are completely unfit for service…I own but one horse. I have a Yankee horse which I captured…when he dies I will try & capture another…about Early invading Maryland..I…know but little…my dear mother I very much fear that you are giving yourself much unnecessary uneasiness about me. Your troubles are mostly imaginary ones…you folks at home are too apt to imagine us constantly exposed to danger…I much prefer Virginia to both Carolina Coast Service……our prospects for a speedy peace are very good…Alfred…[July 20, 1864]…spent the evening…with a Mr. Reaves & family who lives near our camp…he has two very interesting daughters…Capt. A. B. Mulligan, 5th S. C. Cavalry, Butler's Brigade, Hampton's Cavalry Division, A. N. V. The initials A. N. V. stand for Army of Northern Virginia. You need not put any other address as the post master always [us] well posted as to the whereabouts of each command & will forward the letters…A. B. Mulligan." Light soiling, else VG
