War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 1 1/3pp. large folio, written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Camp of 5th So. Ca. Cav.", Oct. 2, 1864, to his mother & sisters, in part: "As we have been very activity engaged for the two days past…I feel I ought to write…I am not well but are able to be up and…have done some duty. Myself & two others invalid officers have charge of an important bridge near my camp when with about 100 of our dismounted cavalry. We have been on duty for two days. Our Brig. is about three miles from here and have been fighting, but our loss in numbers…is small. We had the misfortune…yesterday afternoon to lose our Brig. Genl. Dunovant, he was killed, almost instantly also Lieut. Tupper of Co. D, my Regt, severely wounded…there has been fighting all along our lines from here to Richmond…we are doing very well…we are driving back the enemy at almost every point. We have taken a great many prisoners along our lines. This great stir & battles will put an end to my furlough I fear, but the campaign will soon be at an end…the bad weather is in our favor in as much as the enemy are trying to advance & we are as a general thing acting on the defensive. Our army have great confidence in the results of the battles yet to be fought and…all will turn out well...A. B. Mulligan." Minor spotting, else VG.
