War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "In Camp near Burgess' Mills, Va.", Oct. 9, 1864, to his mother & three sisters, in part: "…yesterday morning I joined my command of 125 dismounted men…the balance of the dismounted men of our Brig. is…under command of Maj. Ferguson of the 6th Regt…building breastworks about a mile from Burgess' Mills. Maj. F. is a very clever gentleman from Spartanburg…I find it quite pleasant to be with him. His command are not moved about much being dismounted…I shall be in want of some winter clothing soon…in the way of clothing…I shall want the new flannel shirts drawers…I would like to have a large overcoat made of them like the one Mr. Lockwood made for me last year. Do let Mr. L. see them & if he can make one overcoat out of them like the one he made last year with my large cape & get him at it at once & send the coat…be Sergt. Quackkenbash. Have it lined with some dark, thick wasted stuff like he made with two large pockets inside of [the] skirts, a pocket on outside breast & one on inside…I have four (4) heavy Yankee blankets with me and if I get good chance will get good overcoats etc…Alfred B. Mulligan". Light toning, else VG.
