War-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 3pp. large folio, written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, "Camp of Dismounted men of Butler's Brig.", Oct. 16, 1864, to his mother & three sisters, in part: "…as to sister Caroline getting a situation in Columbia. I have nothing to say about it…therefore cannot offer her any assistance in that way. I suppose most of the women employed there to be Yankees and many of them of doubtfully character…I see nothing objectionable in such an occupation & it may be that the persons employed are all clever people. Mrs. C. being one of the employers of the establishment is an evidence of it being all right. Sister C. could get good recommendations as to character etc from Rev. Wood, Morgan & others in Columbia. The first thing to be done…is to apply to the person having charge of the business…we had a service this morning from a member of our Regt who is a pretty good preacher. This afternoon another man is preaching for our command. We have very fine singing in this camp. One soldier from Anderson District a Mr…sings most beautifully. It is a great treat…to hear good music…my two horses are mending finely and will soon be fat…Alfred…[Oct. 17, 1864]…all is quiet…A. B. Mulligan. Negligible damp stains, else VG.
