A patriotic Virginia young lady's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by a certain "Anna", with hand-drawn ink rendition of, "The Flag of Our Confederacy", with patriotic quote, reading: "You darling little rebel you", Winchester, [Va., no date, but most likely November, 1862], to Lucy, in part: "Well Lucy, I have come to the conclusion that I am to remain shoeless and soleless during the remainder of the war…my hopes of getting a pair of shoes were all centered in Berryville. I have ceased to trust in Mr. Oglin's fruitless promises…my aching toes testify this cold, wintery morning in November that there is a certain member of the "genus homo" in our town who can excel any woman [that] I ever saw, header of, or dreamed of, in breaking promises [then] that old shoemaker! How, I would like to pommel him! We were very lonely after you left. The house seemed deserted. We have no boarders at present. The "Little Lieutenant" to whom Mary took such a fancy left Winchester a day or two…I felt really sorry to see him leave. I am glad your wish to see Gen. Jackson has been gratified…did you hear…that Gen. Longstreet was killed? Such was the rumor…but I do not credit it…yours sincerely, Anna…". VG
