A good war-date Confederate officer's letter most likely written by Capt. Thomas M. Meader, Co. C, 2nd Missouri Cavalry, 2pp. 8vo., "Camp on Lee's Creek", [Arkansas], to his wife concerning the Rebel army's defeat at the battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas on March 7, 1862 and their subsequent retreat, in part: "I am again at my old camp, but alas! darling with a heavy heart our country has sustained a heavy loss & one from which it will take time to recover. Gen's. McCulloch & McIntosh both fell on the 7th inst. Our army was compelled to fall back to Van Buren is now enroute for that place on the Frog Bayou road. I shall be at Fort Smith on the 12th inst. Come up & meet me there & bring mother with you. I want to see her. Tell her it will be as well for her to have everything ready to move in case we have to desert Fort Smith. Do not feel uneasily for it. I shall have to make arrangements to take you all into Texas if we do move …don't say anything to the servants. Get Mr. Craig to see to the things until Hollis gets back. I am in a great hurry & cant visit…God bless you my precious wife, Meader." Minor paper loss, with light edge toning, else VG.
