LONGSTREET, James (1821 - 1904) Confederate major general who commanded Lee's right wing at Antietam, and the left flank at Chickamauga. Longstreet has been accused of delaying his attack at Gettysburg, leading to the Confederate defeat there. Autograph Letter Signed “James Longstreet” Macon Miss., jany 13, 1866, 2pp., pencil, to General Geo. George H. Thomas, VG. In part, “I am induced by the reports that I have heard of your kindly feeling toward me. .. to use your influence with the Governor of Tennessee in securing the vote of that state for me as President of the Mobile and Ohio Rail Road. I think that I am a good oraniser ... I believe that Governor Brownlow has the magnanimity to lay aside all feeling growing out of political errors ... I ask you the favor to bring my case before His Excellency in a favorable light ... I inclose a copy of a letter recently received from ...Lt. Gen. Grant ...” His efforts fell short.
