In part, “I am induced by the reports that I have heard of your kindly feeling toward me. .. to use your influence with the Governor of Tennessee in securing the vote of that state for me as President of the Mobile and Ohio Rail Road. I think that I am a good oraniser ... I believe that Governor Brownlow has the magnanimity to lay aside all feeling growing out of political errors ... I ask you the favor to bring my case before His Excellency in a favorable light ... I inclose a copy of a letter recently received from ...Lt. Gen. Grant ...” His efforts fell short.
