War-date Union soldier's letter, 1p. 4to., written by Pvt. Mathew Halpin, [POW Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62], Co. K, 22nd New York Vols., Camp Keyes, Upton's Hill, [Va.], Oct. 18, 1861, to his friend Albert A. Fletcher, reading, in part: "…I received a letter from George Crane a few days ago. His Regt. [34th New York] was stationed about 3 miles from our camp. I intended to go and see him, but found the[y] had moved. We got double blankets yesterday and except to get a new United States uniform this week…our right wing went out on picket and our Lieut. Col. [George T. Thomas WIA Second Bull Run, Va.] led the men 3 miles beyond to enemy's pickets…yours, Mathew…". VG.
