War-date Union soldier's letter, 1 1/2pp. 4to., written by Sgt. Mathew Halpin, [POW Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62], Co. K, 22nd New York Vols., "Camp of the 22d N. Y. Regt. April 27, 1863," to his friend Albert A. Fletcher, reading, in part: "…we have not left our winter quarters yet, but will march this noon. Most of the army have been on the move this 2 days…we shall have another fight before the 6th of June. As a Regt. we would rather not for most of the men swear their time is out, but if they once get into action they will forget all about it and fight better than they ever did…because they know how. They are trying hard to get the 2 years men to reenlist, but I guess its precious few of them that will avail themselves of the chance. I don't like to idea of carrying 8 days rations, but shall have to…or go without. If you see Lieut. Huntely ask him why he don't write…Mathew." VG
