War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. David S. Bullock, [DOD Aug. 15, 1862, Beaufort], Co. C, 7th New Hampshire Vols., [n. p., but Beaufort, S. C.], June 5, 1862, to his wife, in part: "…a schooner that looks like the Tortugas has been in sight…some eight or ten miles out…this is Lucius's birthday…four years old. It hardly seems so long does it.Our children will be man and women…before we shall know it. I went to one of the islands yesterday and picked quite a lot of shells…six of our boys caught 2 turtle last night that weighs about 300 pounds apiece…one of them laid 11 dozen eggs after she was caught…it is a comfort to me to know that the dear ones at home are well and comfortable while I am away…you say…that the war will soon close. I sincerely hope it will…but…we have under rated the strength and resources of the enemy. It is true we have whipped them in every battle but two or three, but we have got but a small part of their territory and if they go into a guerrilla war it will last for years. There is but one way to close it up…that is to free and arm the slaves. It would be bloody and a great many innocent persons would suffer, but if they drive us to it they shall find tha[t] we can be as stuffy as they are…God grant they may see their fly an give up…I have a slight cold. The second since we left N. H….David." Also, included are two stamped transmittal covers, both addressed to his wife Orissa A. Bullock. Minor spotting, else VG.
